In our opinion A software professional doesn’t need to know more than 3 programming languages. I have even seen some friends gone without learning more than 2 programming languages. While it is easily compelling to learn more that bunch of programming languages, most of the times we end up actively using 3 programming languages.
According to the above chart from statista survey, JavaScript and Python seem to have dominance over most of the other programming languages. The omnipresent SQL is always there if we have to talk to a DB though. Also notice that Java is trending only at 4th place.
Some of the programming language needs tend to differ from one country to the other. Depending on which country you live in and to which country you offer software professional services to, learning a language becomes easier and necessary. Here is the list from recent statistics

So, this article expresses solely my personal views. You should use your discretion in choosing which language you should consider start learning. I have heard many of my friends and colleagues say that learning second programming language is a lot easier that learning the first one.
